LSD..... Love, Sarvakhap Panchayat and Death...

Sorry for a break in that aadha Gulaab Jamun series.... But here is a more important discussion that is weighing heavily on my mind.... Now, the khap issue has been hot for a while but what suddenly attracted my attention was the Chief Minister's support for Khap Panchayats..
But before I begin the discussion... Here's a disclaimer.I am an unbiased spectator of the entire issue and I ,for now, don't have a girlfriend of the same gotra... As a matter of fact, the only girls I know having gotra same as mine are my sweet little cousins.
This is gonna be a long post, if you are short of time, jump to the last two paragraphs...

For those who are unaware of the issue, let me explain how all this goes. There are some age old rules governing marriages in Haryana . One, you have to marry a girl of your own caste and two, you can't marry a girl of the same gotra (sub-caste/surname). Also, you can't marry a girl having the same gotra as your mother's maiden gotra or your grand-mother's maiden gotra. And if this ain't enough, you can't marry a girl from a village where the majority population has the gotra same as yours. In short, these rules make sure you aren't left with many choices.
And love marriages can rarely comply with these. First you find a lovable person. Then, ensure that her gotra is not same as your or your mother's or your grand mother's gotra (and some people take this upto past seven generations i.e your grand-grand mother's gotra and so on). Then you check for the majority gotra in her village and the majority gotra in your villlage. Finally, you convince your and her parents.
Well to me and many youngsters here, all these rules defy logic. So, some people due to the filmy love stories defy these rules and marry without worrying about this gotra shit... This very decision spells doom for them... For the last few months, news-papers have been flooded with khap panchayats ruling against such couples and several honour killings resulted.
But this ain't the major issue. The major issue is that these diktats and khaps find favour with 90% of population of Haryana. Even my parents have warned me against loving a girl of another caste/of the same gotra. And so the politicians are reluctant to take any action against any of the killer khap panchayats. It all started with Naveen Jindal protecting his vote bank and soon the CM Bhoopinder Singh Hooda openly supported Khaps and even labeled them as NGO's in Haryana.
This has given Khaps enough power to challenge even the constitution and they are now demanding a transformation of these rules into laws. Strange? how come they demand anything when the entire country is demanding a ban on them?
Well for a mentally stable human being unaware of politics, digesting all this has been a tough task. How come a state with one of the highest literacy rates, per capita income bows to such conservative ideas? It all indicates clearly- people of Haryana have not been taught to think logically. Where does the fault lie? How long will this continue? These are important questions which have to be answered, but no one seems willing to take the bull by its horns.
There are clear indications that all this happens for political gains. Khaps pass such orders to ascertain their authority over poor, illiterate farmers and labourers and the politicians use this authority to get these votes.

This a vicious circle wherein a common lover boy has been trapped. Now any couple violating any of the khap rules has finally got these options:
1) Go to the court. Get security. And finally get killed as your securitymen prove to be incapable against the mob.
2) Don't go to court and get killed.
3) Celebrate Raksha Bandhan with your love instead of a Valentile's day. After all love is love. Transform your love into sisterly one...

And the writer has got these options:
1) Never ever fall in love.
2)Fall in love and never go back to Haryana.
3)Fall in love, go back to Haryana... Fight the Sarvakhap Panchayats( read police + politicians + CM + your own family + the khaps)

What would you choose? If you choose 3, odds are high that you won't be alive long enough to read many of my posts... good luck..

  4. actually as far as i know there aren't any particular laws as such in the constitution but this has been in practice for decades and therefore there violation is taken as against the whole community and as a shame for the families.

So basically it is a problem of people being orthodox despite being well educated.

  5. yeah... Saumya is right.. perhaps a wrong choice of words on my part... I should have used 'practices' instead of 'rules'....

  7. Well written Deepak............
KHAPS are no doubt here to stay & that too for long until & unless people are ready to change their orthodox thinking.....education is one such tool that can bring the change but awareness & overhauling of the entire ladder from top (read political system) to bottom read the people comprising panchayats has to be done. It would take enormous efforts but the efforts are worth it!!
